Having been enticed to dash off and buy Fairy Tale in New York, I’m bursting to share my review. Firstly, though, here’s what tempted me:
New York. A restaurant near Park Avenue. It’s early evening, and dusk is falling. So is the snow. Jude and Carrie are only killing time while they wait for their flight to London. They don’t know yet that their life will never be the same.
When rock star Jude gets stranded in New York with his family on Christmas Eve, he has no idea that he is setting in motion a chain of events that will turn their Christmas into the most magical one yet…
No good deed goes unpunished, or so it seems to Jude and Carrie on the morning of the twenty-fourth of December. The previous day, they gave up their London-bound flights to someone in crisis. And now, a spectacular whiteout is grounding all planes, and Jude, Carrie, and baby Maya are stuck far from home.
Tired, hungry, and just a little panicked, Jude loads his family into a cab and returns to their hotel. But there’s no room at the inn, and not even a platinum credit card will make a difference. Snow is falling heavily, and the family is facing a very bleak night indeed.
How do you celebrate Christmas with no place to stay, no food, and no presents? Join Jude, Carrie, Maya and a cast of colourful characters in this fairy tale story of Yuletide in New York.
My Review:
It’s the day before Christmas Eve… Right from the very first few pages, where, despite having been on a long tour with his band and desperate to get home, Jude offers to exchange his plane tickets to a man in dire need, I was hooked. Immediately, I was thinking but what about Carrie, your little baby? There again, following Jude’s thinking, his recollection of what seemed to be the longest flight in is life when Carrie went into labour, you can understand Jude's impulsiveness, particularly as the anxious man’s baby is premature. I warmed to Jude straightaway. This is the kind of impulsiveness you could only adore in a man. How could Carrie not love him for it, even if she is a little less enthusiastic about cutting their return home so fine with their respective parents to entertain on Christmas Day – together, under one roof!
The sumptuous hotel suite the man arranges for them to stay in until Christmas Eve in lieu of him does, however, make things more bearable, quite romantic actually: luxury in opulence and snow falling softly outside. Softly peaked snow, though, is not quite so romantic when piled feet high, causing the airport to cancel all flights. Jude and Carrie can’t get home, the hotel is now full, and it’s cold outside. You get the picture. Actually, you do get the picture. Nicky Wells has written this beautifully. You are right along there with Jude and Carrie and little Maya, especially at the children’s hospital, where Jude gives an impromptu performance for the children, some of whose parents can’t reach them. My heart just melted here, this is definitely a sloppy smile and teary chapter. Jude’s total lack of conceit only adds to his obvious charm, cue twinkly-eyed children and fluttery-eyed nurses
Add help from strangers, in the form of an ex-Italian cop and his exuberant family, and the nagging question that Jude really wants to ask Carrie and you have a magical story with a quite perfect ending. Fairy Tale in New York is heart-warmingly, upliftingly, gorgeously Christmassy and hugely satisfying - an absolute must-read for the season. If you know any readers, might I suggest a little Amazon gift voucher? I really would highly recommend this beautiful little novella as one to curl up with, Christmas chocs and mulled wine to hand.
Fairy Tale in New York is now available in Kindle and paperback editions from all Amazon domains, including: Amazon.co.uk| Amazon.com
Fairy Tale in New York can be read as a standalone. I, for one, am sooo glad that I did. It further tempted me to buy, Spirits Of Christmas, also by Nicky Wells. That’s my Christmas reading sorted.
Spirits of Christmas: A Rock’n’Roll Christmas Carol
At one time, up-and-coming rock singer Jude had it all: a great band, a platinum record, a loving girlfriend. This Christmas, however, he is well down the road towards spontaneous self-destruction.
Unwitting at first, Jude has progressively alienated his band and driven away the love of his life. Tonight, the night before Christmas Eve, he has broken the final taboo during a disastrous gig. Yet Jude doesn’t see how badly his life has derailed, not until a ghostly procession of legends passes through his bedroom with a series of vivid and powerful wake-up calls.
Will the Spirits help Jude put the friendship, love, and rock music back into his Christmas?
Spirits of Christmas is a modern-day rock’n’roll adaption of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. This novella will enchant romance readers, rock lovers, fans of ghost stories, and everybody who adores the festive season.
