Need a Hero?
on. Welcome to the blog where selfless authors will be brightening
your Tuesdays by sharing their male protagonists, along with their heroic qualities for you to ogle … erm, admire.
Welcome, Liv Thomas, the other half of Isabella Connor, author of Beneath an Irish Sky. Beneath an Irish Sky was a labour of love for two internet buddies, who have still not met in person – Val Olteanu lives in Vancouver, and Liv Thomas lives in the South of England, where she works for the NHS.
Liv is kindly sharing Luke, who seems to have a natural talent for romance, and loves animals. I’m sold.
First of all, we’re listing five facts so you can get a feel for him (I did say for him). Next is a brief excerpt showing our hero in action. Lastly, the pic! Does your hero want to come out to play? Send him on over!
FIVE FACTS about Luke:
- Young Irishman Luke Kiernan is not your typical hero. He’s a Traveller, only twenty years old, 5’8 and slightly built. However, he has glossy black curls, blue eyes, and looooong eyelashes, and didn’t someone once say we’re all the same height when lying down?
- Luke is very stubborn, and brave to the point of being
foolhardy. He would probably die for those he loves. - Luke is highly principled, and passionate about justice and equality, having been the victim of lies and prejudice which led to the loss of the most important person in his life.
- Luke is quite an innocent when it comes to romance. However, he has a natural talent for it...
- Luke loves animals, especially horses and dogs.
A brief EXCERPT showing our hero in action: Remember, heroic gestures come in many guises. He doesn’t necessarily have to swim an ocean or save the world. Little gestures can be just as heroic.
‘Hello, love,’ she said, smiling at Luke. ‘Ready for some tea and a slice of my walnut cake?’
Unbelievable. It was as if Jack didn’t exist. ‘Maggie, I must say, I’m more than a little surprised at you.’
Maggie helped Luke remove his jacket. ‘And why would that be? What am I supposed to have done?’
‘Letting Luke go wandering on his own. He’s only just out of hospital. He should be taking it easy.’
‘I’ve got a damaged knee and sore ribs. I’m not on life support,’ Luke
muttered.
‘He needed some fresh air,’ said Maggie. ‘If you’d been back earlier, you could have gone out with him.’
‘I had a lot of things to sort out,’ said Jack, his voice raised. Maggie tutted as he brushed impatiently past her, heading for the study.
‘Well, we’ve had a nice afternoon,’ she said. ‘Just because you’ve had a bad day, you don’t have to take it out on me – or Luke.’
Jack stopped. Maggie was right. He was being totally unreasonable. He turned back, and moved forward to give her an apologetic kiss on the cheek, but Luke stepped between them, jaw set and head raised defiantly. ‘What the …?’ Jack began.
Maggie touched Luke’s arm. ‘Thank you, Luke – but it’s okay,
really.’
Jack glared at Luke as the penny dropped. ‘Did you seriously think I was going to hit Maggie? For Christ’s sake, that might be how it is where you come from, but you’re in civilisation now!’
Without speaking, Luke limped off on his crutches to his room.
‘Well done, Jack. Well done,’ said Maggie.
Jack raised his hands in frustration. ‘How do you expect me to react? After what I was just accused of?’
‘Oh, wake up!’ Maggie lowered her voice. ‘He didn’t accuse you of anything – he reacted instinctively. Doesn’t that tell you something?’
‘I know he’s been around violence, but …’
‘But what? Can’t you see? He thought you were going to hit me – men hitting women is something he expects. Do you see what I’m getting at?’
Suddenly he did. And it was sickening.
Synopsis:
Jack Stewart thought he’d put the past behind him. On the surface, he has everything – success, money, a big house and he is never short of an attractive woman by his side, but a tragic road accident shatters his world.
Raised as an Irish Traveller, Luke Kiernan hasn’t had it easy, and when he wakes in a Dublin hospital to find the man he’s hated since childhood at his bedside, he’s hungry for revenge.
Two very different worlds collide, bringing new dangers, exposing past deceits, and unearthing dark family secrets buried long ago. But from tragedy springs the promise of a fresh start with two women who are intent on helping Jack and Luke mend their lives.
Can new love heal old wounds, or are some scars there for
good?
